Derwin “D. Friday” Friday is a nationally recognized saxophonist, recording artist, and bandleader whose work has become a defining presence in the contemporary jazz landscape of the Southeast. Raised in the musically rich environment of multi‑rural churches, Friday began playing saxophone at the age of nine, developing a sound rooted in soul, intention, and emotional clarity.

In 2007, Friday co‑founded 5th and York, a Charlotte‑based contemporary jazz ensemble known for its polished blend of smooth jazz, R&B, and organic groove. The six‑member group — featuring vocals, saxophone, drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards — has become a regional mainstay, performing at major events and venues throughout the Charlotte metro area and across the southern United States.

5th and York has shared stages with internationally acclaimed artists including Earth, Wind & Fire, Frankie Beverly & Maze, and Anthony Hamilton. The ensemble released its debut album, Nascentum, in 2011, followed by All In in 2014. Their most recent project, the live album No Chaser, is accompanied by a full‑length video production executively produced by Friday, capturing the group’s dynamic performance presence.

In addition to his work as a performer and recording artist, Friday is the founder of Baby Brothers Entertainment, LLC, established in 2012. The company serves as a creative and professional platform for his artistic ventures, emphasizing excellence, refinement, and high‑quality production across all projects.

Friday’s artistic influences span a wide spectrum, drawing from the literary insight of James Baldwin, the musical innovation of Stevie Wonder, and the narrative warmth of James Taylor. This diverse foundation informs his approach to composition and performance, resulting in a sound that is both contemporary and deeply expressive.

Beyond the stage, Friday is a dedicated medical social worker, serving the Charlotte community with the same empathy and commitment that define his music. His contributions to the field earned him recognition as Inspire Social Worker of the Year for the city of Charlotte, N.C.
